About Sowmya Reddy

A social worker with over 15 years of experience in grassroots activism, research, training, community mobilization, women’s rights, human rights, humane education, animal welfare, environmental protection and policy advocacy.

Sowmya Reddy represents the new wave of Indian politics: Highly qualified, globally aware, environmentally conscious, and yet deeply grounded to the reality of the Indian system and its challenges. She has a rare and much-needed mix of knowledge, enthusiasm to serve, capability and kindness, all of which she has proven over the years through her hard work at the grassroots level. As an MLA, she has brought about impactful changes to the lives of people, especially the most underprivileged, and believes politics should be progressive, participative and accountable.

In over 15 years of her experience in grassroots activism, she has worked to provide employment and education, empower women, protect human rights, preserve the environment and advocate government policies.

Being the daughter of the former Home Minister, Sri. Ramalinga Reddy, who was also the MLA of Jayanagar constituency for four terms, she understands the community of Jayanagar very well and has seen it evolve over the years. With such deep insight into politics and the constituency, she realises the issues of the people. She truly believes Jayanagar has the potential to become the most developed constituency of India and she is determined to make this a reality.

She has been conferred with the Aadarsh Yuva Vidhayak Samman for Best Outstanding Performance in Development Work & Promotion of Parliamentary Democracy.

My areas of focus

  • Women: I will ensure women’s issues are heard in the State and Central bodies
  • Youth & Employment: I will work to ensure the youth of Bengaluru South get employed by providing them training and organizing multiple job fairs to connect employers to potential employees
  • Healthcare: I will work to ensure state-of-the-art healthcare is accessible to all citizens of Bengaluru South
  • Education: I will ensure education to all children of Bengaluru South and also provide access to cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence & Machine learning so every child is prepared for the digital age
  • Water and Sanitation: I will work with the Central Government to formulate technologically advanced mechanisms to solve the water and energy crisis of Karnataka, including Cauvery water flow into Karnataka
    Infrastructure Development: I will transform Bengaluru South into a model smart neighborhood and ensure its connection to the rest of Bengaluru via metro and public transport.
    Environment and Sustainability: I will take steps to improve the green cover of Bengaluru South and also work with National and International leaders to tackle the global warming crisis humanity faces
    Startups, Trade, and Innovation: My goal is to inspire and incubate hundreds of entrepreneurs from Bengaluru South and support them with every tool needed to succeed, such as coworking spaces, subsidized legal and accounting services, and access to investors
  • Transparency and Accountability: I will create physical and digital forums for people to provide their feedback and also track the work I have done in the spirit of transparency and accountability
  • Taxation: I will strive to bring changes to the GST Act to reduce tax terrorism and simplify GST compliance. We will demand a higher share in tax devolution for Karnataka in the 16th Finance Commission.
  • Karnataka Art, Culture & Kannada Language Preservation: I will be the beacon of Karnataka’s ancient and rich culture in National and International forums. I will establish the World Kannada Cultural Institute & Museum and Karnataka Handloom Trade Center in Bengaluru South, which will become the shrines of Karnataka culture

Sector Wise Promises

Women

  • I will ensure that the Mahalakshmi scheme is effectively implemented: ₹1 lakh will be given to every woman below the poverty line
  • I will set up skill development centers specially for women. I will help women of Bengaluru South access loans and Government schemes.
  • I will back Stree Shakti Sanghas and affiliated organizations to empower women
  • I will ensure the safety of women by using AI enabled smart CCTV cameras to constantly monitor and report unscrupulous activities
  • I will ensure swift justice for crimes against women in the Bengaluru South constituency
  • I will implement women’s health awareness programs and organize camps for early detection of conditions such as breast cancer and reproductive health issues.
  • I will also provide healthy nutrition and build awareness among pregnant women through primary health care centres
  • I will set up free maternal care centers in Bengaluru South
  • I will provide free vocational training for women aged 15-49 years to prepare them for careers in different fields such as healthcare, hospitality, technology etc., and ensure their placement at companies with market salaries based on their experience

Youth & Employment

  • I will set up a Youth Council forum in Bengaluru South to encourage participation of youth in politics
  • I will conduct skill development and vocational training for youth and coordinate job fairs to bridge the gap between employers and potential employees
  • I will ensure that all eligible youth receive an apprenticeship of ₹8,500 per month for one year
  • I will fight for the Employment Guarantee Act for urban areas that will ensure our youths have jobs making them productive members of the society and providing them with a dignified living
  • I will encourage the establishment of service & manufacturing industries that will provide jobs to the talented youth of South Bengaluru
  • We will set up state-of-the-art sport complexes at affordable rates to encourage youth participation in sports events and tournaments
  • I will ensure effective implementation of the Yuva Roshni scheme: ₹5,000 crore startup fund for youth

Healthcare

  • I will ensure access to quality and equitable healthcare services for all residents of Bengaluru South by increasing the capacity and quality of healthcare in Government hospitals
  • I will fight for the Right to Health law, which will provide state-of-the-art health care to all citizens.
  • I will ensure automatic GPS enabled, signal-free corridors for emergency ambulance services using smart technologies
  • I will set up free counseling services and awareness programs to address mental health challenges under the National Mental Health Programme
  • I will make health insurance more accessible to the public and concentrate our efforts to bring all the hospitals in the constituency under the Union Government Insurance Scheme to reduce out-of-pocket expenses for medical treatments

Education

  • I will use funds from MP’s local area development scheme (MPLADS) to renovate schools to International standards across Bengaluru South
  • I will start Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) skill development workshops to promote digital literacy and prepare every student for the digital age
  • I will champion the Right to Education Act, guaranteeing access to high-quality education for underprivileged children

Startups, Trade, and Innovation

  • I will attract international investments into Bengaluru south as it has world class infrastructure and one of the most talented youth in the world
  • I will support startups to expand internationally and promote their participation in global trade fairs
  • I will create affordable co-working spaces and startup hubs with state-of-the-art facilities in Bengaluru South to encourage budding entrepreneurs and business leaders of tomorrow
  • I will establish a corpus fund to assist startups during natural disasters or business disruptions
  • I will provide startups with subsidized legal and financial advisory services

Water and Sanitation

  • I will work with the Central Government to formulate technologically advanced mechanisms such as treatment of used water from households and generation of CNG and treated water that can be used for irrigation from sewage water to solve the water and energy crisis of South Bengaluru
  • I will expedite the implementation of the Mekedatu project to increase the availability of Cauvery water for the people of Bengaluru. I will demand the Central Government fund the planning, development, and execution of the Cauvery 6th Stage project

Environment and Sustainability

  • I will create a core environmental forum in Bengaluru South that will partner with global players in knowledge and technology transfer and implement environment improvement initiatives
  • I will launch comprehensive environmental education and awareness programs in schools and communities to foster a culture of sustainability
  • I will table a private member’s bill to formulate a zero-waste policy by focusing on reducing, reusing, and recycling waste, introduce community composting facilities, and promote circular economy initiatives to minimize landfill usage and waste generation
  • I will prioritize the advancement of sustainable energy solutions, including the promotion and renewal of CNG-powered and electric vehicles, to ensure access to clean and affordable transportation options, building a greener and resilient future for all
  • I will increase the green cover of Bengaluru South by collaborating with corporate organizations and encouraging them to plant trees in and around their offices under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative

Infrastructure Development

  • I will push for the completion of Namma Metro Phase 2, 2A, and 2B in the next two years and Phase 3 in the next five years to ensure that citizens of Bengaluru South areas are well connected to Bengaluru North areas, from Bannerghatta Road to the Airport
  • I commit to improving and expanding public transport through Satellite Town Ring Road, Peripheral Ring Road for citizens from areas of JP Nagar, Banashankari, Basavanagudi, BTM Layout, Jayanagar and Bannerghatta to ensure that they are well connected with other parts of Bengaluru
  • I will develop Bengaluru South into smart and sustainable neighbourhoods with smart lighting systems, smart energy grids, AI enabled surveillance cameras, and real-time public transportation tracking
  • I will redevelop local commercial spaces into a creative world of Indian art, culture, and heritage presented through a fascinating panorama of craft, clothing, cuisine, and cultural activities

Transparency and Accountability

  • I commit to accountable government practices and transparency in decision-making
  • I will ensure that all the Congress Guarantees are effectively distributed to the beneficiaries
  • I will set up an MP online portal specially for public reporting of financial reports, tendering and procurement processes and contract awarding
  • I will launch accessible digital and physical forums where citizens can contribute ideas, feedback, and vote on local projects and policies, ensuring that governance truly reflects the collective will and wisdom of our community. The voice of every Bengaluru South citizen will be heard!
  • I will form diverse advisory panels composed of community members, experts, and stakeholders to provide guidance and recommendations on various governance issues
  • I will advocate for amending the 74th Amendment Act to ensure that its aim of decentralizing urban governance and strengthening local self-governance is achieved
  • I will simplify the process of accessing and implementing government-related works and schemes to ensure smooth disbursement from government offices
  • I will ensure a just and fair society for all citizens of Bengaluru South

Karnataka Art, Culture & Kannada Language Preservation

  • I will establish the World Kannada Cultural Institute & Museum in Bengaluru South. It will be a hub for Kannada literature and arts, ancient culture & artifacts, dedicated to celebrating & propagating Karnataka’s illustrious heritage globally
  • I will establish the Karnataka Handloom Trade Center to showcase the state’s handloom heritage
  • I will promote cultural festivals to celebrate the customs and traditions of culture-rich Bengaluru South
  • I will set aside funds to rejuvenate and preserve structures of religious and cultural pride in the area

Animal Welfare

  • I will upgrade all veterinary hospitals in Bengaluru South and ensure adequate staffing and infrastructure for optimal functioning
  • I will improve local bird habitation by incorporating water bodies and fruit-bearing trees that support indigenous bird species

Business Community

  • I will push for a simpler GST system for SMEs, with easy filing, extended deadlines, and a dedicated GST help-desk in Bengaluru South.
  • I promise a streamlined digital portal for quick trade license management—apply, renew, and pay in one place.
  • I’m committed to launching a support program for local import/export businesses, complete with informational sessions and global market access.
  • I propose tax incentives for small businesses to energize the local economy—reduced rates, tax holidays, and state duty rebates.
  • I will foster local business hubs providing essential shared services, cutting costs for startups and small businesses.
  • I plan to partner with financial institutions to offer bespoke financial products, ensuring our local businesses have access to affordable credit.
