Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to hound bride and groom – State Transport Minister’s daughter Sowmya Reddy, also aspiring politician and owner of vegan restaurant Paradigm Shift and Abhishek Raje, freelance consultant with animal rights NGOs – to give us contacts for all the vendors who helped them plan their eco-friendly, zero waste Bangalore wedding last month. We even got the bride’s mother Chamundeshwari Ramalinga Reddy to chime in. See below for vegan wedding caterers, anti-flower florists and State Forest Department goodie bags.
Requirement: We wanted no cut flowers or imported buds, because the water it takes to grow one acre of flowers can be better diverted towards growing five acres of grain. The only flowers used at the wedding were Bangalore rose garlands for the couple. We also wanted no thermocol and plywood to be used in the décor.
Solution: Dhruva Kumar did wonders with potted plants and paper floral arrangements. Call 9844405540.
Requirement: No paper cards.
Solution: We did Facebook and Whatsapp invites, but another good idea is to get recycled paper cards made by CRY. Also see Tomato & Co for their plantable stationery solutions that turn invites into lavender. Read here.
Chandrashekar & Sons catered an outstanding vegan meal replacing khoya (thickened whole milk) in Indian sweets with sweetened tofu, creating raw jackfruit biryani and even swapping ghee with refined oil.
Requirement: The South Indian fare and desserts couldn’t contain animal products like ghee, milk or khoya, since both our families are vegan.

Guest Goodie Bags
Requirement: Nothing wasteful or non-vegan.
Solution: Jackfruit, sandalwood, rosewood, neem and mango saplings from the Karnataka Forest Department nurseries were given as return gifts to guests. Call Circle Conservation Officer on 23344686 to find out the location of your neighbourhood nursery. Also in the bag were key chains with pictures of dogs up for adoption from Let’s Live Together. Find them here on Facebook.
Requirement: No plastic or non-recyclable material.
Solution: Rachana, an initiative of Seva-in-Action that gainfully engages differently abled adults, made brown paper bags from recycled cardboard boxes. Call 25520347.
Requirement: I knew that we couldn’t restrict the number of invitees too much, but we didn’t want to leave behind a big mess.
Solution: Hasiru Dala, a member-based organisation of waste pickers provides waste management services for individuals, apartment complexes, offices and weddings. Log on here.
Requirement: No gifts please.
Solution: Ask instead your guests to write a cheque to the NGO of your choice.
