A social worker with over 14 years of experience in grassroots activism, research, training, community mobilization, women’s rights, human rights, humane education, animal welfare, environmental protection and policy advocacy.
Sowmya Reddy represents a new wave of Indian politics which is progressive,
participative and accountable. With her strong roots in social work, she is deeply
connected to the society and local politics. In over 14 years of her experience in
grassroots activism, she has worked for providing employment and education,
empowering women, protecting human rights, preserving the environment and
advocating government policies.
Being the daughter of the current Home Minister, Sri. Ramalinga Reddy, who was
also the MLA of Jayanagar constituency for four terms, she understands Jayanagar
politics very well and has seen it evolve over the years. With such deep insight into
politics and the constituency, she realises the issues of the people. She truly
believes Jayanagar has the potential to become the most developed constituency of
India and she is determined to make this a reality.
As an environmentalist, she has been doing various awareness programs about water conservation, segregation and composting. She was instrumental in ensuring the plastic ban in Karnataka by working closely with citizens, Resident Welfare Associations, BBMP officials and elected representatives.
Being a woman entrepreneur herself, Sowmya understands the discrimination women face in India. She wants to empower women to grow in every field by providing them skills training, jobs and government loans to start small and medium businesses.
Sowmya believes strongly believes that democracy is “of the people, by the people, and for the people”. She wants to create an efficient feedback system between the people and the MLA so the voice of the people is heard.
India has world’s largest youth population. This large youth population can make India the next super power. But to achieve this, we need to provide them employment. Sowmya plans to provide skills training to all young people and get them employed.
Education is an important tool for every strata of society, particularly for the poor, to get access to employment and improve their lifestyle. Sowmya wants to achieve this bringing government schools at par with private schools and giving quality education to underprivileged kids.
A big portion of Indian society does not get access to basic healthcare. Sowmya plans to improve government hospitals and increase their capacity to serve more people in need. Also, she wants to ensure government schemes reach the people of Jayanagar.
Determined to transform Bengaluru by public policy, progressive laws and public participation
She has been the Vice President of Indian Youth Congress for Bengaluru district since May 2017 and has led youth congress workers in various programs like party membership drives, voter registration drives, civic leader training programs, election campaigns and spearheaded central government protests and rallies.
She was the Secretary of KPCC from April 2016 to April 2017. During the time, she conducted various rallies and programs for women's rights and empowerment.
She was on the board of AWBI from February 2014 to February 2017. She was involved in the enforcement of animal protective legislation and supported progressive laws like Animal Welfare Act & worked closely with the animal husbandry department to set up a functional state board in Karnataka
Sowmya Reddy founded Paradigm Shift, an activist center and restaurant in 2014. Through words, art, food, activism, education, and community, Paradigm Shift created a space that empowered various groups by hosting various talks, panel discussions, screenings, workshops on various social justice issues.
She did her masters in Environmental technology from New York Institute of Technology in 2008. She was a collective member at Wetlands Activism Collective where she organized protests, civil disobedience, teach ins, skills training, screenings, lectured in public forums & NGOs for all of WAC's campaigns.
She completed her B.E., Chemical Engineering from R.V. College of Engineering in 2004. During her college, she started working as an educator in schools bringing about awareness regarding humane education, compassion towards animals, sustainability, environmental education through NIE (Newspaper in Education) in government and private schools.
